DRJ
Conference Success: Support For BCP Industry At An All-Time High
I recently returned
from Disaster Recovery Journals 26th conference in San Diego,
Calif. It was truly a remarkable experience. We had more than 1,200
paid attendees at the show. Combined with our exhibitors, speakers and
various board members, the total reached more than 1,800. That is a
record attendance for our conference and for any in the industry!
I was very impressed with the quality of speakers we had at our conference.
Our attendees were able to hear first-hand accounts of recoveries that
took place after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Paul Honey, director of global contingency planning for Merrill Lynch
& Co., gave a fabulous presentation on the recovery efforts needed
to keep Merrill Lynch doing business as usual following
the World Trade Center attacks. Thomas DAuria and Henry Jackson,
from New Yorks Office of Emergency Management, spoke on Rebuilding
the EOC During a Crisis. They provided many details and insights
into this difficult task. Our other speakers were equally interesting
and received rave reviews. To read more, see the conference article
and photos on page 60.
Overall, the conference was a definite success. Everything from
the sessions, the workshops, the lunches and breakfasts, and the other
activities was well received by our attendees. I heard many comments
from people who were anxiously looking forward to our next conference.
We at DRJ are very proud of this success, but getting to that point
has not been easy. It was unknown after Sept. 11 how budget cuts would
affect attendance at industry conferences. We knew interest in business
continuity would be increased, but would that translate into action?
It was hard to predict. Now, we know the answer!
I spoke with many attendees at the show and voiced the concerns I had
about budget cuts. Almost all told me the budgets had been cut in other
areas, not in the business continuity divisions. What a change. For
years, it seems, the DR budget was always the first to go.
Many attendees at the conference spoke of the renewed commitment by
upper management. I have always tried to push the importance of management
support. Many of our articles in the past have focused on this issue,
as have speakers at past conferences.
A business continuity professional can have the best ideas and plans,
but without support from management and an ample budget, there is no
way to implement it successfully. I am glad to see that this problem
is easing for some of you in this industry. For those who are still
struggling, perhaps our resources can help.
BCP Media, a new not-for-profit company focusing on awareness videos,
has several films geared toward gaining support from upper management.
BCP Media also has a remarkable video on the World Trade Center. This
was put together using footage from FEMA. It is a fascinating look at
the recovery efforts that began moments after the terrorist attacks.
For more information on any of their videos, see their ad in this issue
of DRJ.
We are pleased the business continuity industry has rebounded so well,
but we are saddened that it took such a horrible tragedy to act as the
catalyst. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 will impact our industry
for many years to come.
In this issue of DRJ, youll find two more articles discussing
lessons learned from the World Trade Center attacks.Youll also
find our Other Services Survey. This survey offers a great opportunity
to discover new companies who may have services that suit your needs.
If youd like to be included in a future survey, please contact
our office.
A brochure detailing our next conference is also included in this edition.
The 14th International Disaster Recovery Symposium and Exhibition will
be held at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla., Sept.
8-11, 2002. This show is sure to be popular, so sign up early.
I hope to see you there.
