Spring
World 2004 Marks 30th Conference
By JANETTE BALLMAN
Spring World 2004 marked the
30th conference for Disaster Recovery Journal since 1989. The conference
attracted more than 1,400 contingency planners from around the globe.
Held March 7-10 at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort,
the conference included more than 50 sessions, workshops and classes.
According to attendee evaluation reports, the conference was rated as
one of the top shows produced by DRJ. The high-ranking was due in part
to the expert speakers, timely topics and a comprehensive exhibition.
“Our conference evaluations have rated this show one of the best
in DRJ’s history,” said DRJ Vice President Bob Arnold. “We
strive to deliver the content our attendees are looking for and will
continue to do so at future shows.”
Gold sponsor IBM gave attendees an added opportunity for relaxing and
networking by hosting the Monday night hospitality. Co-sponsors for
the conference included: Agility Recovery Solutions, Evergreen Assurance,
FedEx Custom Critical, Forsythe Solutions, Hewlett-Packard, MessageOne,
SunGard Availability Services, DRI International and PPBI. An interactive
disaster simulation session, sponsored by SunGard Availability Services,
and a Cyber City Internet area, sponsored by Rentsys, contributed to
the learning opportunities for attendees.
The exhibit hall was filled to capacity, with more than 85 exhibitors
manning more than 100 booths. “That definitely showed the support
of the industry from the vendors with the services and products they
offer,” said Arnold.
One highlight of the show was the recognition of industry pioneers who
have made distinct contributions to business continuity planning throughout
the years. Many of the recognized pioneers attended DRJ’s first
conference held in Atlanta, Ga., in 1989. The industry leaders were
recognized during a general session and were given special ribbons to
wear throughout the show so other attendees could identify them.
DRJ has sponsored 30 shows during the past 15 years. The conferences
have grown from 300 attendees to more than 1,400, representing a 450%
growth.
DRJ President Richard L. Arnold is pleased with the growth of the conference,
despite many companies cutting budgets and travel expenses.
“We are pleased with the contributions our conferences have made
to the industry and will continue to offer top-rated sessions and events
at future conferences,” said Arnold.
Todd Wiedman, of Coca-Cola Enterprises, won the deluxe Walt Disney World
vacation package as part of DRJ’s 30th conference celebration.
Jack Henson, of Fidelity Investments, and Michael Emerson, of Citrix,
each won a pass to take part in the Richard Petty Driving Experience.
Peggy Pelliccione, of First Services, and Joanne Madore, from Hospital
of Ontario Pension Plan, won tickets to see La Nouba, the new show from
Cirque du Soleil at Downtown Disney.
DRJ’s Fall World 2004 will be held in San Diego, Sept. 19 - 22
at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel and Marina. For more information, see
pages 79-85.
