Immediate Response
By Cat Dealer Network Speeds World Trade Center Rescue And Recovery
Efforts
NEW YORK, N.Y. An emergency can bring out the best in people.
And on Sept. 11, 2001, it brought out the best in the Caterpillar dealer
network. Ever since the terrorist attacks on the United States that
fateful day, dealers all over the world are once again making good on
their promise that help is just around the corner.
Immediate response to the New York City disaster site in addition to
subsequent coordinated efforts made by numerous other Cat dealers across
the country, helped volunteer rescue/recovery efforts get off to a quick
start.
Within hours of the World Trade Center attacks, 52 light towers and
numerous small generators were dispatched to the NYPD so rescue efforts
could continue at Ground Zero throughout the evening. Later that same
day, a convoy of 14 tractor-trailers fully equipped with generators,
light towers, transformers and cable were dispatched and escorted via
police escort into the city.
Support continued throughout rescue and cleanup efforts with dealer
and corporate Caterpillar staff worked around the clock some
staying for weeks to ensure critical power and light to Ground
Zero and the financial district.
What made the need for power even more urgent was that two substations,
along with transmission lines that tied them into the grid, were destroyed
by the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers. The absence of these
substations left thousands of customers in Lower Manhattan without electricity.
Consolidated Edison of New York (Con Ed), the local utility, mobilized
several thousand workers to begin restoring power. In the meantime,
it turned to the Cat dealer network for critical temporary power.
Con Ed acted immediately and began delegating generators to individual
buildings to restore power to the affected areas. The mayors office
provided a priority list, dictating which buildings could safely be
brought back online.
We were called into action as an emergency supplier of portable
generators responding to the emergency, said Jim Delaney, general
manager of H.O. Penn Power Systems Division. We had planned for
this type of emergency in the past, and the Cat network responded immediately,
allowing us to ship all sizes of generators, miles and miles of cable,
and multiple transformers and light towers into the city.
Delaney credits the accomplishment of the feat to the cooperation and
support of the dealer network. Emergency power equipment from dealers
all over the Northeast were brought in to help the relief efforts.
Equipment was staged in several locations to allow response flexibility.
Generator sets, light towers, cable and other equipment was all up and
running on the site by midnight on the 11th.
Before the equipment could be dispatched into the city, each piece was
prepped for critical operation. Once generators and equipment arrived
at designated dealer locations (rental ready), teams added extra safety
measures.
Although reliable rental units are always ready to go, we double
checked batteries and filters so each piece of equipment was ready for
the tough environment that surrounded the site, says Glen Bouthillette,
rental manager for Foley, a supporting Cat dealer. One dealership alone
prepped 33 2-MW units. Nineteen of those were shipped directly into
the citys financial district.
Once equipment was delivered to the city, the next challenge was supplying
operators and technicians to set it up and support it. Crews worked
around the clock to hook up emergency power to the prioritized sites.
In total, H.O. Penn coordinated a total of about 80 service technicians.
At any given time, the dealer had 40 to 50 service vehicles in the city.
A Con Ed command center was also set up near the disaster site. Con
Ed dispatched assignments to dealers via the command center.
Dealer technicians walked job to job hooking up power modules and transformers
based on the directives received from Con Ed. Once Con Ed techs located
the main transformer to the building (which was often 208 volts), Cat
dealer technicians wired the appropriate transformer and generator and
set the cable on the street. Con Ed technicians then hooked the building
to the generator. When that was complete, Cat dealer crews started the
generator to power the building.
Y2K provided an extra layer of protection for the WTC terrorist attacks.
In preparation for Y2K, many customers had installed temporary standby
generators. These companies utilized the generators on Sept. 11, relying
on dealer support for preventive maintenance.
Buildings ingested tons of dirt and debris, the debris clogged
the generators air filters, which had to be changed every few
hours.
To respond to the needs of its existing customers, a 32-ft. trailer
was set up in the city and used it to coordinate the dispatch of technician
crews and equipment.
Preparation paid off not only for customers but also for dealers. In
preparation for Y2K, we cross-trained mechanics and operators to deal
with emergency situations like this one, says Delaney. It
paid off because despite the chaos of the event, all the plans we had
in place ran very smoothly.
The coordination and cooperation of the dealer network were also a necessity
to accomplish a second great feat powering Wall Street so it
could open just six days after the terrorist attacks.
After the disaster, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani assessed the damage
and announced the New York Stock Exchange and other major exchanges
would be up and running on Monday, Sept. 17.
That meant the financial district needed additional power. Many organizations,
like the NYSE, never lost power. Others, like the NASDAQ, had no power.
Still others, like the Mercantile Exchange, needed additional power
to open.
Working in conjunction with Con Ed, H.O. Penn delivered and installed
41 2-MW power modules and 27 miles of cable to the financial district.
Shortly after daybreak on Monday, Sept. 17 the bell rang and traders,
brokers and others who support the largest financial operation in the
world began to return to work.
In the meantime, Con Ed had begun laying new cable some of it
in newly dug trenches, but most of it on streets where wood frame troughs
had been built. Con Ed brought power in from other substations just
a few days after Sept. 11, and began taking Caterpillar generators off-line.
Within 10 days, just a few power modules were left running. Less than
20 days later, the last 2-MW power module was removed and the grid in
Lower Manhattan was restored.
The way Con Ed handled power restoration was incredible,
notes Delaney. And the cooperation between members of the Cat
dealer network was just as incredible. We all worked together to meet
a common goal, and we all succeeded.

Geotrack Inc. Finds
Operational And Financial Gains With IT Outsource
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. During a briefing with Geotrack, Jonathan Tan,
President and CEO, shared that the year old partnership has produced
tangible results. A year ago, we experienced a company information
shut down due to a virus penetrating our systems, said Jonathan
Tan. The cost of employees, clients and internal communications
resulted in a frozen infrastructure. When that incident arose,
DataStaffs disaster experts identified the problem and created
a systematic plan to resolve the issue quickly, efficiently and permanently.
Our responsibility is to be there for our clients at all days
and times, said Kevin Weiss, President of DataStaff. Geotrack
benefits by having its resources with focused backgrounds at his fingertips.

New Company Responds
To Growing Network Security Threats
WATERTOWN, Mass. Two local experts in the computer security field
have launched ARX Partners, Inc., an e-security consulting
company specializing in protecting organizations from data and financial
losses due to computer network breaches. Computer integrity, internet
transactions and voice and data information are essential to the lifeblood
of businesses and organizations, says ARX Partners co-founder,
Danielle Fournier. When these systems are compromised or security
is breached, a companys sensitive proprietary information can
be compromised, corrupted or used for unintended purposes. These types
of security breaches can have devastating effects on the finances, data
integrity and operations of an organization, continues Ms. Fournier.
Fournier launched ARX Partners, Inc together with co-founder Gary Silverman
in October 2001 in response to the increasing financial losses generated
by security breaches. ARX Partners, Inc., a minority owned business,
was born of the idea that in todays internet-driven, e-commerce
economy, the only constant is change. ARX Partners clients include
organizations from finance and banking, insurance companies, law firms,
biotech companies, accounting firms, architectural firms and health
care companies. For more information about ARX Partners, Inc. or to

Special Team for Biological and Chemical Threats Cleanups Created by
LVI Services
NEW YORK, N.Y. LVI Services, the national leader in full-service
environmental remediation, has announced the creation of its Special
Emergency Response Team (SERT). This elite team, drawn from LVIs
most experienced staff, has been specially equipped and trained to respond
to any biological and chemical threats to public or commercial buildings,
24 hours a day, seven days a week. LVI Services, a private company,
has taken this initiative noting that if there were a concerted effort
to attack public and private office buildings, it would be imperative
that the clean-up and rehabilitation of buildings occur quickly, efficiently
and with trained personnel. Currently, government agencies and organizations
lack the large-scale capabilities to undertake a major clean up of numerous
buildings and as a result many companies and organizations might be
left displaced for lengthy periods of time. Along with the leadership
to form this group, LVI purchased new, state-of-the-art equipment that
includes Level-A suits with self-contained breathing apparatus, to ensure
the health and safety of its workers in the case of bio-terrorism. For
more information, please visit <http://www.lviservices.com>.
