PPBI
Best Practices Award
By DIEDRICH TOWNE, CBCP
Private and Public Businesses, Incorporated (PPBI) commissioned an
award to recognize achievement beyond the norms of our industry. The
deed of gift for this award reads, “This award may be given to
an individual, a corporation, or a public entity, for their exemplary
planning, practices, or in response to a critical incident. They must
have exhibited the positive aspects of partnerships that work.”
This perspective is unique to PPBI and the deed of gift clearly communicates
the values that the membership, advisory board and the board of directors
believe are critical to successful planning and essential in your recovery.
As I offered in the most recent PPBI Newsletter, “The tragedies
in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh … have shown the wonder
and organization of partnerships. PPBI is fortunate to have several
members of the Board of Directors that have been at the forefront in
proving these partnerships work! It is intriguing how involved these
PPBI Board Members are in developing partnerships and in solutions that
make the difference. Brent Woodworth leads the IBM Crisis Response team
and members of that team Dr. Tom Phelan, Mike Braham and Mark Prutsalis
have been working on the logistics of aid and support in South Asia
… .”
At the Spring DRJ conference in Orlando on March 8, 2005, the PPBI Best
Practices Award was presented to Brent Woodworth and Dr. Tom Phelan
with the following testament as stated in their nomination: “Dr.
Tom Phelan and Brent Woodworth, are the recipients of this award …
it is offered that they accept this award as the stewards for those
thousands of responders, donors and their team members who supported
their journey to … assist with the tsunami disaster relief; a
big responsibility. As members of the IBM Crisis Response Team, they
helped develop logistics plans and organized response efforts for victims
of this calamity with special concern for trauma and the protection
of children. They provided the training necessary for volunteers to
carry on these response plans … . As stewards … it should
be noted that they not only talk the talk on partnerships, they can
capably handle the heat of crisis management and walk the walk with
genuine zeal! They exhibit their participation and leadership in …
PPBI, Global Partnerships for Preparedness, and in addition they make
ideal ambassadors for their respective companies! Brent and Tom suffer
from a willingness to share …We thank these gentlemen and recognize
their dedication… .”
This award, presented at the general session with many of the PPBI Board
of Directors on the dais; Marianne Guinee, CFO and vice chairperson;
John Jackson, strategic planner; Peter Laz from the training committee;
and Gary Villenueve the membership chairman all offered their congratulations.
It was quite a surprise for Brent and Tom and the weight of this stewardship
a serious responsibility which by itself was quite humbling. I can not
think of a more deserving and responsible team with which to work.
PPBI encourages nominations for future best practices awards. If you
know someone in your community who has exhibited exemplary performance
in planning or when faced with a disaster, please send nominations to
PPBImail@twcny.rr.com, and include a detailed description of the meritorious
performance, a brief summary of the disaster incident, and contact information
for both the person making the nomination and the candidate for the
award.
If you read this column you already know a lot about PPBI and how we
encourage the building of partnerships that make a difference when you
critically need it! Learn how to build and maintain those relationships
with us in San Diego at the DRJ Fall World Conference. The pre-conference
class is titled Train the Trainer – Fundamentals of BCP and Emergency
Management Practices; this is the one to take home for your staff. Our
post conference class is a request from DRJ to present NIMS ICS for
Business and Industry, combining the NFPA 1600 standard with NIMS Incident
Command System to help you create an easy to adapt ICS model for your
compliance efforts. These are professionally designed courses; expect
and get a great training experience with PPBI.
PPBI will also sponsor and present Incident Management Plan Assessment,
a highly interactive workshop on Sunday afternoon from 1:30 pm to 4:30
pm. This workshop will teach you how to use industry standards and the
PPBI Incident Management Plan Maturity Model to measure and assess the
maturity of your plans. Please join us for this workshop; the tools
alone are worth your time!
All of our PPBI certified courses and workshops are available at your
location. Contact us at PPBImail@twcny.rr.com to inquire about our education
solutions tailored to your location and requirements. Partner with the
experts at PPBI!
