Disaster Recovery Journal

Volume 9, Issue 3
Summer 1996

Letter From the Editor- Richard Arnold
Well, summer’s here and I know it is a busy timefor everyone. It certainly has been busy at the Journal office.
A subcommitte of our EAB has been busy studying the design and making suggestions. We are in the process of updating the look of the magazine. You may have noticed several changes that have taken place in this issue, beginning with the cover.
This new look is not only more pleasing to the eye, but we feel it is more helpful to our readers. The goal is to provide the most information in the best format as possible. We feel we are well on our way to accomplishing this feat.
Another change which has taken place in this issue is our new “date” line. Instead of the traditional July/August/September, we have replaced it with “Summer 1996.”
We’ve also added two new columns to this issue. One is on pages 78-79. It is our Users Group column and features highlights of recent meetings which I have attended. This column will run regularly. If you would like your group highlights published, please send the information to our office.
Our other new column is Security Issues. This features covers a variety of security issues in the contingency planning field.
Also featured in this issue are the results of the Editorial Advisory Board Survey. This survey form was sent out with the Jan/Feb/March issue to those subscribers who needed renewal. We’ve had over 5,500 returned at this point, with more coming in daily. We’ve published the result of the first 3,000 in this issue. In the future, we will be able to print the results of all of them. The survey gives an insight to the disaster recovery industry and should be useful for research purposes. It provides an overview of the ever-changing disaster recovery industry. The EAB will review the final data and present a summary and projections into the future of the industry. To view it, turn to page 70.
Here it is July and the Eighth International Disaster Recovery Symposium and Exhibition is off to a smashing start. We already have nearly 300 people registered and it’s two months away.
So far, preparations for the conference, which will be September 9-11, 1996, in Atlanta, Ga., are going well. We have lined up industry leaders as speakers at this conference. To guarantee a reservation, Register early for the workshops (there are two session times, three for Sunday and six for Tuesday and Wednesday).
There will also be numerous exhibitors featuring the latest technological advances in the contingency planning field. There will also be two mobile, disaster recovery trucks making their debut appearance inside the exhibit hall.
This conference will be a must-see for all contingency planners, whether novices or experts.
For a free brochure detailing the conference, call our office or view it on the Internet. Our website can be accessed at http://www.drj.com.
You can also send us E-Mail at drj@drj.com. We would love to hear your opinions on the changes we’ve made to the Journal as well as any suggestions you may have.
Another change will soon be occurring at our conferences. We asked our attendees in which city they would like to have a conference and the majority picked Orlando. Therefore, we will be debuting a symposium in Florida at the Hyatt Orlando. This conference will be in September 1998 (definite dates will be announced later). The room rates are set at $99 per single. We wanted the low rates for our attendees’ benefit and we were able to negotiate them by remaining with the same hotel chain we have in Atlanta.
We hope to see you in Atlanta. In the meantime, enjoy your summer.
