Volume 10, Issue 3
Summer 1997

From the Publishers Desk
It’s hard to believe it’s already time for our Summer issue. Where has the time gone?
It’s been a busy year in the DR industry. As always, the disasters and business interruptions around the world never cease. And because of this, we contingency planners are forced to attempt to stay ahead and stay educated. It’s the only way to survive in this ever-changing industry. As you know, it’s a tough business that keeps all of us extremely busy.
I have been traveling extensively throughout the nation over the past few months trying to stay in touch with all of the aspects of the contingency planning world.
I have done this traveling for several reasons. One, I enjoy meeting those in the industry and get their feel for what’s going on. Two, I feel I can bring these experiences to the pages of this magazine, thereby benefitting you. And three, I try to keep abreast of all the changes going on out there so that I can pass the information along to you.
The Private and Public Businesses, Inc. (PPBI), of which I am a member on the Executive Board, has been busy also. It started out on June 4 (see page 56), when we talked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), followed by a meeting with the President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection on June 19, 1997. On June 21, PPBI met in Chicago to talk about credentialing (Preferred Authorized Customer Access [PACA] and Florida ACP).
Keeping on top of this changing industry is a difficult task. That’s why DRJ tries to pack each issue with as much information as we can.
In this issue, you’ll find our updated alternative site survey (see page 63), as well as articles discussing selection criteria for alternate sites (see pages 10, 13, etc.) We are also featuring several case study articles (see pages 39, 50, etc.) We know from your comments that “lessons learned” and case studies are one of our most popular features - and a great way to increase your knowledge!
Another way to learn about the DR industry is through our website at www.drj.com. For further information about accessing this webpage see page 91 of this issue.
Our next symposium is approaching quickly. This show will be held September 14 - 17, 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Hyatt Regency. We already have 250 people registered and we’re still 75 days away from the conference. Remember to make your hotel reservations by August 14 to qualify for the conference rate.
Once again, we’ve expanded the conference to include even more informative breakout sessions and workshops. Now attendees can enjoy four days of networking, learning and problem-solving. One new feature we feel will be very helpful is the Fundamental Path. If an attendee follows the designated sessions, they’ll come away with a complete understanding of the DR fundamental methods.
And the best part is that all conference events are held in one location! Reserve your room in the Atlanta Hyatt Regency and every event - workshops, breakouts, general sessions, and the exhibits - are all located downstairs. There’s no need to try to travel from your hotel each day to the conference. You’re already there! An added benefit is that you can network with other attendees before and after the show! It’s a great way to meet others in the industry.
DRJ has always been committed to making our conference the best for attendees. We consider your needs before all others.
A few years ago, I had to make a tough choice regarding our conferences. Our first West coast conferences were held in Palm Springs, Calif.
However, within a short time, we had outgrown the hotels in that area. Our only choice, if we stayed in Palm Springs, was to move our events to the Palm Springs Convention Center. We decided against this because we felt our attendees would not be able to effectively network during after-hours. Instead, we looked for a different city and now our West coast conferences are held in San Diego.
Register now for the next event and try it for yourself! But register early to get a hotel room and avoid the cutoff date of August 14th.
Have a nice summer!
