West
Bengal State More than 700 people died when floodwaters rose
in India and Bangladesh by rains started on September 18. The floods
left about 13 million people homeless in India and 125,000 people homeless
in Bangladesh.
Belize City, Belize
Hurricane Keith damaged much of Belize City on October 2 after
its 75-mph winds swept through the region and its hard rains fell. Wooden
homes were toppled and roofs were ripped off ten miles south of Ambegris.
The Category 3 storm caused flooding which claimed four lives in Central
America and Mexico.
Western Arizona
Several people were swept away with their trailers in waters
after storms rushed though Wenden and Salome, Arizona on October 22.
Hundreds of people were also asked to evacuate their homes.
Okayama, Japan
The strongest earthquake to hit Japan in five years rocked western Tottori
prefecture on October 6. At least 106 people were injured, 1,700 homes
were destroyed and 2,500 people were evacuated from their homes because
of the 7.3-magnitude earthquake. The jolt knocked over people, shattered
windows, crashed market shelves to the floor and cut off electricity
to over 9,000 homes. Aftershocks of 4.9 and 4.6 were also felt.
Sion, Switzerland
Floods and landslides swept through the Alps region on October
15, after more than 24 inches of rain fell in two days. A village was
buried and at least 21 people were missing. A total of 21 were found
dead, including a 7-year-old girl after the overflowing Stura River
swept her away.
Northern Philippines
At least 11 people were killed when Typhoon Bebinca tore through
the island of Luzon on November 3. The dead were a part of a group of
100 mountaineers. Offices, schools and financial markets were closed
and all flights were cancelled in Manila.
Middle East
A tremor measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale rumbled through Turkey on
November 15 sending many running into streets. An aftershock with a
magnitude of 3.8 hit about an hour later. No injuries or damages were
last reported.
Eastern India
Cyclone 03B trampled eastern India on November 29 and caused major damage.
Strong winds exceeding 80 mph downed power lines and heavy rains flooded
roadways. Forty-seven fishermen were last reported missing.
Indonesia
Floods and mudslides took 46 lives on the island of Sumatra on November
26. Seventy-one people were also last reported missing.
Ukraine Snow
and icy conditions were the reason for two dead and 241 injured in the
Ukraine on November 30. More than 4,500 homes were reported without
power and train service was halted.
Tanzania
At least 26 people died and 17 were injured after the Mirongo River
crest on December 3. The torrential rain took place near Lake Victoria.
Switzerland
Rescuers searched for three missing when a mudslide swept through the
southern Swiss Alps on December 13. The mud blocked roads and burst
a hydroelectric power plant main.
Central Turkey
Five lives were taken in the village of Yasarlar in Konya province on
December 15 by a fire sparked by an earthquake. The fire started in
a mosque where the victims were praying. The earthquake, which measured
5.8 on the Richter scale, was centered 160 miles southwest of Ankara.
Seattle, WA
At least 100,000 homes were left powerless and roads were closed when
harsh winds swept through western Washington on December 15. Snowy eastbound
Interstate 90 was closed for four hours because of fallen trees and
one death was last reported. Another ice storm kept 195,000 out of power
in Oregon, Arkansas and Texas. There, more than 100 schools were closed.
Tuscaloosa, AL
Twelve people were killed when a F4 Fujita scaled tornado ripped through
a 12 mile span of Alabama on December 16. Two killed were a 15-month-old
boy and his father. The childs mother and two sisters were hospitalized.
At least 50 others were hurt and more than 400 homes and businesses
were destroyed.
Beijing, China
Chinese police made arrests in connection to a fire that took 309 lives
on Christmas Day. The fire blazed at a disco club where many were celebrating.
It was suspected to have started in the basement of the shopping center
where the club was held on the fourth floor. Only 60 people survived
the blaze and seven were injured.
Little Rock, AR
A severe snow and ice storm blanketed parts of the south central
part of the U.S. December 26, leaving four people dead in motor vehicle
accidents and over 300,000 without power. Roads in Texas and Oklahoma
were closed. All three runways were shut down at the Little Rock airport
in Arkansas and many flights were canceled at Will Rogers World Airport
in Oklahoma and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.
