It is the year 2001 already! It's amazing how fast the past year has gone by. One year ago we were all celebrating the successful rollover to the Year 2000. The dreaded "millennium bug" was squashed and contingency planning became a household word. I am glad to see that the momentum that started with the Y2K hype has continued. Business continuity planning, disaster recovery and contingency plans are commonly discussed in many areas where it was previously unheard of.

I have met many people over the past year who are new to the industry. They have all been very eager about their new responsibilities and very willing to learn. We've also been very lucky to have a lot of new companies spring up in the contingency planning industry. Look through our magazines over the past year and you'll find a lot of new advertisers in those pages. I'm glad to see these new companies. It's a good sign that the industry is still growing and prospering. I have said for many years how important it is for companies to have contingency plans and disaster recovery plans. It looks like a lot of people have begun to listen.

New companies, new personnel, new products and now a new year! I wonder what this year will bring for contingency planners and the industry. I hope that it continues to prosper and grow as well as it has over the past year. I know that we at DRJ will do all we can to promote the industry, its products, services and people.

In this issue of DRJ, you'll find a variety of information, including risk mitigation, alternative backup methods, insurance coverage, global area networks, performance teams and incident response planning. You'll also find information on new products in the industry, addressing the media, and BCP software.

We're also featuring our annual Consultant Survey (page 92) in this issue. This survey is a compilation of consultants worldwide who provide service to the contingency planning industry. Please take a few moments and look through these pages. You're sure to find a company or two who can meet your needs the next time you're looking for the advice and help of a professional.

If you ever have any topics you'd like to see covered in our magazine, please contact me or one of my editors. We are always interested in hearing what topics are of interest to you. DRJ's next conference will be in San Diego March 4-7 at the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel. I am hoping to meet a lot of you at this conference.

We are offering 69 different sessions, courses and classes at this conference. A detailed brochure on our sessions, speakers and special classes was mailed out in November. If you did not receive a copy or need extras, please contact our office.

We're very excited to introduce several new features at this conference. I think these new features along with our returning events will greatly benefit our attendees.

Highlights include:

New post conference classes: Several groups have signed up to offer courses after the conference closes. You can make the most of your travel time by choosing to attend the course that best suits your needs. "

A Mock Disaster Exercise featuring a simulated exercise. It is sponsored by JS Training with special effects being provided by Fox Studios. (This looks mighty interesting. Better sign up now. We already have 125 participants enrolled, and there is a limit of 200 participants.)

A Cyber City Café that will allow internet access to our attendees. The sponsor is GE Capital IT Solutions.

A Hospitality Reception sponsored by IBM and Strohl Systems. This event is always fun for all. Remember to sign up early for this conference.

Currently, we have 550+ registered. Many events and sessions have enrollment limits and fill up fast. You can also qualify for early registration discounts. I'm very proud of our conferences. They offer the best value in the industry. You won't find more or better information anywhere else in the industry.

I look forward to meeting many of you at our San Diego conference! And I look forward to another year of growth for the contingency planning industry.

Richard L. Arnold
