While flying home after wrapping up DRJ’s 40th conference in Orlando, I started to realize how much our business landscape has changed in just one short year. Most evident in my travel is the availability of flights and the lower crowds seen in the airports. But like most businesses, adjustments are being made in the airline industry to ensure survival through lean times. This means less flight options, but more filled planes. I also recently read an AP article discussing how most organizations are sharpening their pencils to ensure cutting employees is the last option. Rules & Regulations … Are An Opportunity to Learn

Often we see rules and regulations as a burden, or in some cases offering leverage to persuade leadership to support enterprise continuity or resiliency is some aspect. They may be both, but they can be far more.
We as professionals should view a rule or regulation as an opportunity to learn. They can offer insights into the direction of our profession and expectations both of governments, society and our own industry.
In many cases a rule or regulation may provide beast or leading practices into how to organization or structure your our internal solutions, even if you are not bound by a particular rule or regulation.
Consider, for example the BS 65000, which discusses organizational resiliency and how resiliency is an enhancement to current BC or DR practices within an organization. Many have referenced the NFPA 1600 as a resource to lay out the development, implementation, assessment, and maintenance of programs for prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, continuity, and recovery. It has served as a program component checklist. One universal tool, from the US government is NIMS. The National Incident Management Systems was intended to be used by the whole community. The intended audience is almost everyone. NIMS provides a systematic, proactive approach to all levels of government, and the private sector to work seamlessly to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce the loss of life and property and harm to the environment.
I’ve only mentioned three, but our data base contains over a hundred. Many offer insights onto broad and growing concern. Many point towards creating a solution within your own organizations that may be reasonable adopted, adapted, and applied.
