The Problem With “Best Practices”
“Best Practices” is a popular expression of the intent
to manage business continuity prudently. Best Practices are seen
as a way to sidestep the quantification of risks, as well as, the
evaluation of the cost-benefit of proposed mitigation solutions.
There are several reasons why Best Practices “Ain’t”.
1) It is unreasonable to assume that a best practice could optimally
answer the BC questions for both my organization and your organization.
2) Given the wide assortment of published “best practices”,
which of the best practices really are the ‘best’ for
any particular circumstances? 3) Which best practices are cost effective?
The fundamental requirements for business continuity is to measure
and evaluate risks, determine which risks are the most serious risks
and then make a rational choice on how to best invest to optimize
return.
