The regular General Membership Meeting
of the MidAmerica Contingency Planning Forum was held on Thursday, March 20,
2003, at Savvis Communications, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
President Angela Swartz Peterson
welcomed everyone to the meeting and introductions around the room were made by
all. She thanked the Savvis
representatives for their hospitality in providing the refreshments and hosting
the meeting. Angie commented the group
was interested in meeting sites, presentation topics, and speakers for future
meetings. If anyone has suggestions for
any of these items, please contact one of the Board members.
Handouts for the Fall DRJ 2003 and
SEMA/MEPA conferences were available to all attendees.
Minutes of the February 20 meeting were
not available for review.
Program Director Harlan Dolgin reviewed
the current program status of upcoming meetings. He commented the April meeting would be to review the
psychological effects and would be held at The Bick Group near West Port.
Angie reminded everyone that annual
membership fees were due. If members or
potential members had questions related to their status, please contact
Membership Director Mike Smiley.
Librarian/Liaison Carl Brooks discussed
the development of the website. He, and
the entire MCPF Board, are looking for suggestions from the membership on
improvements to the website at www.brookstech.net/mcpf/. If anyone has suggestions, please submit
them to any of the Board members.
Under New Business, it was commented that
several areas were offering CERT (Community Emergency Response Training)
classes and they were available to the public.
Chesterfield is offering the classes and information can be obtained at
their website at http://www.chesterfield.mo.us/site/home.jsp?page=pd_programs. Everyone was encouraged to check with their
local municipalities to see if these programs were being offered as well.
There
being no additional new business, the meeting then moved to the featured
presentation – Recovering your Business – The Information Processing
Challenge. Program Director Dolgin introducted the
featured presenter, Mr. David Rabinowitz of EMC Enterprise Storage Consultants.
David
identified numerous challenges being faced in today’s business world regarding
recovery of business data, while trying to eliminate the complexity, time, and
risk. The standard practice is now “Do
more with less.” His presentation
focused on these items:
Ø Obstacles
faced in today’s complex business world.
Ø Disasters can
be unplanned or planned.
Ø Trends in
business continuity indicate more data is critical, data consistency is key,
two copies of data is insufficient, distance between sites does matter.
Ø Features of
storage-based replication, local replication, and remote replication were
highlighted.
Ø There are
three Os that impact recovery solutions – GEO (geography), RPO (recovery point
objective), and RTO (recovery time objective).
When all these are well understood and integrated with the business
objective, solutions can be successful.
David
fielded questions from everyone. A copy
of his presentation can be obtained by contacting Secretary Bathon or visiting
our website at www.brookstech.net/mcpf/.
A
tour of the Savvis Communications network facilities was provided and several
attendees participated.
The
next General Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2003, beginning at
3:00 p.m. The topic will be The
Psychology of Disasters with Susan Flanigan, an independent consultant, as the
featured speaker. Location will be at
The Bick Group.
There
being no additional business, the meeting adjourned at 4:20 pm.
