The regular General Membership Meeting
of the MidAmerica Contingency Planning Forum was held on Thursday, May 16,
2002, at the offices of CATCO Catastrophe Cleaning and Restoration Company,
beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Vice President Dean Donley welcomed
everyone to the meeting and introductions around the floor were made by
all. He thanked Michael Hammack for his
hospitality in hosting and providing the refreshments for the meeting.
The minutes of the April Meetings were
not available for review.
The group was informed that next
month’s meeting will be held at Union Pacific Technologies on June 20. The announcement should go out in early
June.
Membership Director Michael Smiley
reviewed the current status of member renewals for 2002. He also requested that all member
concerns/inquiries and new member requests for information be directed to him
at 314-628-5400 or michael_smiley@stlouisco.com. He will follow up on all inquiries received.
There
was no new business presented for review by the membership. The meeting then moved to the featured
presentation – Facilities Restoration. The featured presenter was Michael Hammack,
President of CATCO Catastrophe Cleaning.
Mr.
Hammack began his presentation with a brief history of CATCO. The restoration services began as carpet
cleaning in the ‘40s and evolved to today’s company. CATCO has associations with a number of cleaning and restoration
companies, i.e. ServPro, Steamatic/BMS Cat, Service Master,
BellCore/Enricon. Most restoration
companies have singular locations and are associated with a national group
specializing in various aspects of restoration. Companies can be certified in the field of catastrophe cleaning
and restoration.
Facility
restoration falls into two categories – Fire and Water. A few new issues that need to be considered
include odor, mold, and weather issues.
Services can be provided on site as needed or consulting provided over
the telephone. A lot of restoration
work is related to weather damage.
Some
highlights from Mr. Hammack’s presentation include:
·
Insurance policies may not cover repairs due to mold
damage. A separate rider may be needed.
·
Some respiratory health concerns may be related to mold
damage, and it is important to show the relationship if there is concern.
·
Follow the proper procedures to dry out damaged items to
eliminate mold development or possible destruction of the items.
·
Water damage falls into three categories:
·
Category 1 – clean water source (i.e. sprinkler head, burst
pipe)
·
Category 2 – unsanitary – gray water
·
Category 3 – unsanitary – black water
·
Restoration company should ask what the source of the water
was. If they don’t, you may get a
“cookie-cutter” clean-up approach.
·
Safety to the restoration company’s associates and tenants
in the impacted location is prime during clean-up. Need to ensure the proper equipment and precautions are
taken. They need to verify that the
source has stopped and that it is contained before proceeding.
·
In a clean water situation, newer carpet may be
salvaged. You should ensure the site is
cleaned up within 3-4 days following the incident.
·
A Phone Tips for Insurance Professionals was
distributed and reviewed by Mr. Hammack.
This handout contained safety tips and steps to reduce concerns during
an emergency to minimize the loss.
·
Fire damage was reviewed.
It’s important to know exactly what has been burned. Black usually indicates the damage is
related to soot, while gray usually indicates damage related to dust.
·
Types of protectant to use on equipment was discussed.
·
An initial step in clean-up is to remove the source of the
fire to begin eliminating odors.
·
You then need to clean all surfaces.
·
It is not recommended to re-odorize a site by spraying
deodorizers, etc. Try to identify
recent events that may have impacted air flow, causing the odors.
·
Halon cleanup is a long, dry-cleaning process that requires
special handling.
A
handout of restoration guidelines and their purposes was distributed. Copies of the handouts are available in
hardcopy format only. If you are
interested in receiving a copy of the handouts, please contact Secretary Bathon
at the information below.
David
Pollard of Steamatic/BMS Cat provided some practices and things they’ve found
as Steamatic has worked through some restoration projects. A discussion among the attendees followed
with several good points highlighted.
The
next General Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2002, beginning at 3:00
p.m. The topic will be Public Relations During a Crisis. The speaker will be Theresa Yohn, Special
Projects Manager at KMOV-TV and the meeting will be at Union Pacific
Technologies in Clayton.
There
being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
