Suit: 35W bridge consultants knew structure was 'overly stressed' and could collapse [Pioneer Press, St. Paul, Minn.]

June 29--Engineering consultants working on the Interstate 35W bridge 11 months before the August 2007 tragedy were concerned that the bridge was "overly stressed" but did not lay out the breadth of the problems to Minnesota transportation officials, according to documents filed Monday in connection with an ongoing lawsuit over the collapse.
At issue are safety calculations an engineer at San Francisco- based URS Corp., working under contract to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, used to analyze the condition of the bridge. But when those initial results were poor, the engineer deployed a different -- and previously unused within URS -- set of calculations, a move that alarmed the company's project manager enough to notify his boss that the engineer was "trying a little too hard to advise MnDOT that the (I-35W) bridge is okay."
Attorneys representing 34 victims and surviving family members are asking a judge to allow them to seek punitive damages in their case against URS Corp.
