Disaster Recovery Journal and Tokyo’s Crisis Management and Preparedness Organization (CMPO) took a lead role in organizing Japan's first major disaster recovery conference. Despite the lack of a firmly established disaster recovery/business continuity industry in Japan, this unique event drew more than 1,000 participants during the course of a single day. The largest event of its kind, Disaster Recovery Conference 2002 was held on Sept. 6, 2002 at the Gajoen International Hall in the Meguro District of Tokyo and sponsored by the Nikkei Group. Interested individuals from all over Japan traveled to hear a variety of speeches and presentations, including highlights from DRJ conferences and its activities in the United States. More than 1,000 copies of DRJ were rapidly picked up by enthusiastic attendees anxious to increase their knowledge of the industry, despite the fact it is inherently challenging for most Japanese to read the publication in English.
