Crisis Decision-Making:
Improving the Quality of Decisions during emergency and disaster situations
Successful crisis management and disaster recovery demands fast and effective decision-making; yet the very nature of a crisis situation challenges our capacity to make high quality decisions. There are many factors that can diminish decision making during critical events, these factors include time constraints, emotional stress, fragmentary (and changing) information “facts,” external pressures, and frequently life and death consequences of the urgent decisions that must be made. Routine processes for making decisions are inadequate for crisis situations. Crisis leaders as well as crisis teams must prepare themselves to make effective decisions in all contingencies.

Managing
a Sustained Operation
When an emergency
occurs, it disrupts the business and those who work
in it. Schedules change, communications and
facilities are impacted, and business is not conducted
as usual. The activation of the Emergency
Operations Center (EOC) is part of that disruption,
as EOC staffers are now doing their new EOC job
and the EOC begins to take on a life of its own.
Many emergencies are over in a matter of a few hours
or even a day. But what happens to the organization
when the event goes on for days or even weeks?
The impact can be considerable.

How
to Develop an Effective Drill/Exercise Scenario
Successful business continuity
and disaster recovery takes more than a plan: it
requires realistic testing and validation. After
all, how will you know if your plans, procedures,
equipment, software, and response staff will actually
perform properly if you don’t test them? To
do that, you have to conduct a tabletop, drill,
or exercise. This in turn requires an effective
drill/exercise scenario. During this hands-on webinar,
you will learn how to develop a successful crisis/BCP/DRP
drill/exercise scenario document.

The Virtual Emergency Operations Centers (VEOC)
We all know what a physical Emergency Operations Center (EOC) looks and feels like. The physical EOC is the “nerve center” of the company’s recovery operations. It houses subject matter experts from different areas of the business. Their role is to manage and monitor the response to the event, as well as the overall recovery of the business. The primary function of any EOC is to establish and manage the Four C’s: Control, Communication, Collaboration, and Coordination. So, what does an EOC look like when it “goes virtual”?

NIMS, ICS & Private/Public Partnerships and the impact they might haveon your corporate BC efforts
Many times, as we develop our business continuity programs and plans, we don't thoroughly understand the impact the public sector can have on them. Most of us appreciate the benefits of networking with others. We
know that training, planning, and exercises are vital to preparedness. And, we want timely incident information and accelerated access back in
to the area, to ensure a successful response. But, have we taken the time to learn about emergency management and how we can partner with our
peers in the public sector? What opportunities exist for us to add greater value to our business continuity efforts?

Challenges of Multicultural Diversity for Disaster Recovery, Crisis Management, and Emergency Response
Disaster recovery personnel, emergency responders, disaster managers, and everyone who interacts with people before, during and after a crisis or disaster needs to be aware of the challenges presented by multicultural diversity. Different workers participating in emergency response activities may face a number of diversity issues. Such challenges go beyond just language barriers (which themselves creates problems in emergency situations) but also include very fundamental assumptions about right/wrong, values, attitudes, customs, and traditions that can be stressed during the contingencies.

Testing Business Continuity Plans beyond the Tabletop
So, you conducted a tabletop drill for the business side of your organization, and the IT department ran its own DRP tabletop. A key recommendation from both drills is that the company should go to the next level – an integrated drill. This means complete functional testing involving business operations, support services, IT, and the dreaded public relations department. Where do you start? How do you successfully test the BCP plans of several departments at the same time? What does “the next level” look like?
