Career Planning Takes Center Stage

Written by  Monday, 20 April 2009 12:43
While flying home after wrapping up DRJ’s 40th conference in Orlando, I started to realize how much our business landscape has changed in just one short year. Most evident in my travel is the availability of flights and the lower crowds seen in the airports. But like most businesses, adjustments are being made in the airline industry to ensure survival through lean times. This means less flight options, but more filled planes. I also recently read an AP article discussing how most organizations are sharpening their pencils to ensure cutting employees is the last option. This was certainly a positive story in light of the never-ending news of layoffs.

"Appeared in DRJ's Spring 2009 Issue"
I see it every day in many of our family’s friends. Luckily not many have lost their jobs, but many have been forced to take pay cuts, reduce hours or similar tactics to limit company-wide layoffs.

It is a tough time for employees and business owners. In this issue of DRJ, we are bringing you information to help. We are featuring a variety of articles on career planning and tactics to increase your marketability within your organization. We have delved into several areas in four different articles. Cheyene Haase of BC Management writes the fi rst article. She shares many of the fi ndings from her company’s Eighth Annual BC Compensation study. She discusses career planning and ways to map the future of your BC/DR career.

John Orlando from Norwich University has provided an article discussing ways to develop your skill sets with higher education opportunities. The third article features Dr. Tom Phelan of Strategic Teaching Associates discussing graduate school for business continuity planners.

The fi nal article is from DRI International on page 78. It discusses how professional certifi cations can assist in advancing your career. Certifi cations offer incredible opportunities for advancing careers, which ties back to Haase’s article regarding marketability. Most hiring managers now are looking for these certifi cations to ensure the candidate is knowledgeable in the area before possibly getting to the interview step.

We touch upon continuing education in many of these articles. There are many opportunities available to you to achieve this knowledge. They include formal education, professional education, networking (local networking groups, online social networks, etc.) and many more. One great avenue for education is industry conferences. There are many conferences available to you and all offer you a wide array of education, networking, certifi cation and much more. Face to face meetings are still the easiest and quickest way to advance your career and continue to develop your career in this fast paced fi eld of business continuity.

In this issue you will fi nd the initial brochure announcing DRJ’s Fall World 2009 to be held in San Diego, Calif. It again will be held at the beautiful Sheraton Harbor Island right on the bay. I hope to see you there!
