Beaufort County Hosts National Guards Largest Ever Disaster Response Event

Written by  DRJ Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:28
As part of Vigilant Guard 2008, the South Carolina National Guard put on one of the largest disaster response training exercises in the history of the National Guard. This intensive three-day exercise included more than 2,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen from more than a dozen states, members of the newly formed Beaufort County Recovery Task Force, state and local firefighters, police officers, Red Cross volunteers and many others to demonstrate response capabilities in the case of a major disaster.

Les Eisner (right), the S.C. National Guard Deputy Adjutant General brief Beaufort County leaders about the National Guard Bureau’s Vigilant Guard disaster response exercise.

Activities during the three day event included search and rescue simulations, the creation of a mobile medical hospital, the evacuation of 150 victims from the area, the distribution of goods to southern and northern Beaufort County, as well as the first-ever landing of a C-130 cargo plane at Hilton Head Municipal Airport.

Col. Pete Brooks, South Carolina Guard spokesman, said Beaufort County was selected as the South Carolina site because it sits on the Summerville Fault line, is in a hurricane-prone area, and because of the “excitement, energy and interest” of county emergency management director William Winn.

Gary Kubic, Beaufort County Administrator said, “We are concerned with the entire emergency response process and were very proud to host this effort. Quality response capability is the first step towards recovery.”
