BT4-04 Editorial

Written by  Mary Herbst
What are the top 3 threats to organizations today?
  • Cyber breaches resulting in the loss of data, intellectual property, and/or actual monetary loss
  • Significant loss of facilities due to regional natural disasters (hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, tornados, earthquakes, etc…)
  • Interruptions in supply chain and/or third party business interruptions.

What areas of BC/DR do you think organizations should be investing in to secure their resiliency for the next 3-5 years? (Where should they put their money?)
  • Monitoring for, preventing (where possible) and quickly responding to cyber incidents. There should be investment in tools and resources to stay on top of the latest threats and to have solid processes for response.
  • More resources to do testing (DR functional tests, tabletop testing, etc…) to ensure that people have done walkthroughs of their plans and have made marked improvements. The journey of creating and testing the plans helps to exercise the muscle memory and bring people on the journey to better respond.
  • Clearly understand the physical and information security risks and put targeted funding to address the most significant ones.
  • Do more assessments of third parties and understand their resiliency risks and whether they are adequately addressing them.

Would you consider the influx of Millennials with the exiting of baby boomers to be a challenge to the technology changes in the resiliency industry? (i.e.: loss of knowledge Vs incoming training needs)

Yes. I don’t see the industry doing enough to bring young people into BC/DR and inspire them to work in this area. We need to work with them to be passionate about what we do and provide more internships and training to young people to make them better planners and responders. We should be working with people who are retiring to knowledge transfer as well.
