The Right Mentor Makes All the Difference

Written by  STAFF REPORTS

Hietpas Ryan2As the saying goes, it’s not just what you know but who you know. Having access to the right people with the right experience at the right time has been a career-definer for Ryan Hietpas. Hietpas is a business continuity analyst with Great Lakes Higher Education, and he wants new BC professionals to benefit as he has from top-class mentors.

In fact, as Hietpas tells us, his No. 1 piece of advice for new BC professionals all comes down to mentorship. “The best piece of advice I can give is to find a mentor. Find someone who will do more than simply build your knowledge of business continuity. Find someone who is willing to help you grow as a professional within the industry.”

Along with finding the right mentor, Hietpas wants new professionals to remember the wealth of possibilities available in business continuity. “I would advise anyone who is considering entering this field to pick a starting point and then focus on driving your career in any direction. There is a wealth of opportunity in this field and lots of indicators that the roles of business continuity and disaster recovery professionals will only continue to grow.”

This young BC professional has been working as a business continuity analyst for two years and he’s excited about what the future holds for him. “I cannot foresee not working in the field of business continuity. As new threats emerge, the field of business continuity continues to adapt and evolve. This makes for a challenging, yet exciting and diverse career.”

While Hietpas has not attended any DRJ conferences he has benefited from a range of BC training and is working towards completing his CBCP and a certification in emergency management.
