Vicky McKim | Aureon

DRJ Fall 2019 | Monday, September 30, 2019 | Breakout Track 1, Session 4 | 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Thirty years ago, disaster recovery planning was assigned to Vicky McKim. She was operations manager for a small company, under the category of other duties she was assigned.

Since three decades have passed, the many response and recovery events have taught McKim to expect the unexpected and figure out ways to reduce the probability of something similar happening in the future.

“Risk mitigation has become a passion of mine that continues to grow to where I’m willing to plan for things now that I would never have considered when I began this career journey,” she says.

McKim, risk management and business resilience director of Aureon, has been in her current position for the past four years and has been working in the business continuity and disaster recovery industry for 30 years.

She will present her lecture “Operational Risk Management – A Missing Key to True Resilience” at DRJ Fall 2019.

According to McKim, knowing the risk exposure of one’s day-to-day operations is an important part of controlling and managing risk. Most companies do well at managing the financial and market risks. Many will monitor their regulatory and contractual risks. Operational risk is often covered only by insurance products.

This session will review common areas to include during an operational risk assessment, as well as exploring some of the frequently overlooked threats to business operations. Risk rating and mitigation are two other key areas that will be covered. Learn about concepts for presenting information to executives and managers who approve strategies and fund mitigation efforts.

An “insider tip” McKim will share with attendees is employee practices are the most overlooked exposure any company has. “Human error is your greatest threat,” she says.

“While cyber security is rightfully at the forefront of concerns, no one should neglect the other risks that threaten business operations and corporate assets,” she says. “Adding robust operational risk management to your enterprise risk governance program will reduce overall exposure and create a more resilient business operation.”

McKim will connect with her audience with query and a question-and-answer session. Attendees can download the slide deck from her presentation which will have plenty of practical information. They also have the option of attending the operational risk management post-conference course for a full suite of tools, document samples, and takeaways.

“Companies should not overlook their client risk exposure,” says McKim. “Signing a high-risk client can damage not only your reputation but disrupt your operations and negate any anticipated profits.”

McKim currently serves on the DRJ Editorial Advisory Board, a board member for Safeguard Iowa Partnership, and the Fusion Customer Advisory Board.

She and her husband, Rodger, live in the Des Moines metro area of Iowa. They have four children and 10 grandchildren who keep them delighted and laughing.

The couple likes long walks, fishing, camping, and traveling. Between the two of them, they have been to 42 states in the U.S., four continents, and 17 nations so far.
