Out of Office Reply: When the CEO Takes Emergency Leave

In 2016, I went to see the doctor about a headache I could not shake. After a CT scan, I was in the car on my way home when the doctor called and told me to go to the nearest ER. I did, and within two days I was being wheeled into surgery for a two-inch tumor on my brain stem. The subsequent six weeks included an infection and more surgery. The next six months involved rigorous physical therapy three days a week to recover my mobility. This diagnosis and treatment plan is pretty life-altering for anyone. Getting the diagnosis as the CEO of a small company can mean everyone in your employment not only empathizes with you but wrestles with their own apprehension over their future, too.
