Rise of the Drones

Understanding and Mitigating Business, Operational Risks The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) market is becoming one of the fastest growing markets in the world. According to Dedrone’s 2017 “Drone Security Insights Report,” commercial, non-hobbyist UAS fleet is forecast to grow from 42,000 at the end of 2016 to about 442,000 aircraft by 2021, with an upside possibility of as many as 1.6 million UAS in use by 2021. Although drones can be expensive to purchase, they can provide invaluable information on scene for an emergency management office, emergency medical services, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments. Additional information provided through this technology enhances life-saving potential when minutes count. Following a disaster, drones can significantly influence the ability to save lives and assess damages. More and more organizations are looking to this platform as a strategic tool for doing business, whether that business is commercial (e.g., photography, package delivery, roof inspections) or emergency management
